Judo
is a martial art involving throwing and grappling. It was established
as a modern sport in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano. Through the study
of various jujitsu styles (Japanese combative arts), Kano selected
and refined those techniques which were most efficient and safest
to practice with high intensity. The end result was Judo, which translates
as "gentle way". Judo became an Olympic Sport in 1964 and
today it is the second most popular sport in the world (behind soccer).
All of our programs offer beginner level instruction and each student
progresses at their own pace, as you continue your study of Judo you
will get into good shape.
Judo is good for recreation, fitness, competition and just plain fun.
We have a recreational program that is available to all students and
we offer additional instruction for those students who are interested
in competition.
Anybody can take Judo. Judo is a great activity for both men and women,
children and adults.
McCleary Martial Arts Center offers

a pre-martial arts class for children ages 4-6 called Lil’ Dragons
and two new programs - Brazilian Jujitsu and Fitness Boxing.
All of our programs offer beginner
level instruction and each student progresses at their own pace.

the gear, training videos and literature you need to improve your
skills.
At McCleary Martial Arts Center we welcome all ages and ability levels.

Karate
is a martial art that involves punching and kicking. It was designed
for self-defense and self-improvement and can be a fun recreational
and fitness activity or it can be a competitive sport.
There are literally hundreds of martial arts that fit into the generic
category of karate. All have similarities with specific defining characteristics
that set them apart from each other. Our style is Chun Kuk Do, which
means "the Universal Way". It was developed and enhanced by
world champion martial artist and film star Chuck Norris. For those
of you who are martial arts savvy - the traditional base for Chun Kuk
Do is Tang Soo Do. The differences lie in the very unique and effective
fighting system developed by our founder, and in the incorporation of
techniques from various other martial art styles that Mr. Norris has
studied.
All of our programs offer beginner level instruction and each student
progresses at their own pace so you do not have to be athletic or in
good shape to do Karate. The good news is that as you continue your
study of Karate you will get into good shape.
Anybody can take Karate. It is a great activity for both men and women,
from children to the prime of life and beyond. For each age group there
are definite and proven benefits.
The
Lil Dragons Program is a pre-martial arts class for children age 4 to
6. Students practice skills and drills that develop and improve hand/eye
coordination, fine motor skills, and knowledge of left and right. They
also learn basic martial arts skills that will prepare them to enter
one of our junior programs.
There are many benefits of a pre-martial arts program, the first being
that classes are taught with age-specific skills. The instructors in
this class are familiar with early childhood development and understand
how children at this age think and learn. Another benefit of this class
is the use of the "Behavior Calendar" which is a tool to help
children learn to identify and be responsible for their own behavior.
Other benefits include; increased attention span, improved physical
coordination skills, improved self-confidence and self-discipline, and
strong preparation for entering the junior martial arts programs.
Mixed
Martial Arts is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports in the
country. It is a combination of both stand up fighting and ground fighting
and includes skills from Boxing, Wrestling, Jujitsu and Kickboxing.
The classes work on a rotating schedule between each discipline with
additional classes for tying standing to ground.
Our program is designed to fit the needs of a non-competitive MMA practitioner.
For example, adults who are well established in their career and have
no desire to enter the ring - but do want a working knowledge of what
they are watching on fight night; or a young player who wants to build
a strong technical base before joining a more intense competitive program.
At McCleary Martial Arts Center anyone 12 years or older can take MMA.
We offer a safe environment where technical skills are emphasized and
safety is maximized. The class provides a good workout that will improve
fitness and teach the skills necessary for self-defense whether a fight
stays on the feet or ends up on the ground.
